I would say triad arpeggios, as these can be helpful for both rhythm and lead playing, as well as providing a foundation for scale-based work later on.
Learning scales. I found the pentatonic scales made jamming possible in any key anywhere on the fretboard. Practicing songs was driving my wife nuts. Well truth be known buying that last guitar made her more nuts.
